Open House Report, LA Edition: Four Really Great Spanish Houses Open This Sunday

Author:

Whether you call them Spanish or Spanish Mediterranean, these houses are ubiquitous around Los Angeles, available in all price ranges and in varying condition. Here are four— one in Los Feliz that hasn’t been touched in decades, which is part of its charm, two in the Sunset Strip area that are celebrity-ready, and our favorite, an incredibly romantic cottage in Beverly Center. All are worth a visit.

1616 Queens Road, Sunset Strip/Hollywood Hills, $2.95M (pictured above)
This spectacular but angular pool may be a little ’90s, but not in a bad way. The rest of the 4-bed, 3.5-bath house from 1926 has been redone in the best kind of boutique hotel style— mostly very white— and you wouldn’t have to do much except move in. Easily someone’s romantic Hollywood dream house, it’s been on the market about five months. The master bath has French doors to a small balcony, and the kitchen’s been redone in a crisp traditional style plus it’s near the patio and pool. There’s also an attached 1-bed, 1-bath apartment. Open Sunday, February 26 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm

3588 Griffith Park Boulevard, Los Feliz, $1.649M
This 5-bed, 4-bath Spanish from 1933 has great vintage details—a master bedroom with a mural, a beautiful hand-wrought iron stair rail (above) and leaded-glass windows— but it also needs some work. Within the required set backs on this lovely street, there’s great potential for landscaping out front but the walled backyard is small, with a pool but not much else. On and off the market since May, 2011, it’s a corner house with an “Andalucian Village” look and worth a visit for the vintage decor. Open Sunday, February 26 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm

6431 Drexel Avenue, Beverly Center/Miracle Mile, $1.239M
Overgrown in the best possible way, this 3-bed, 2.5 bath house has kept much of its charm and matured over the past 80-odd years into what might have been the original builder’s fantasy. The kitchen’s been sensitively redone while getting the best appliances, and the vintage tile bathrooms— in yellow, aqua and sea-green and perfect condition— make this worth a visit. On a street of similarly-scaled period houses and on the market one day, this one will fly off the shelf. Open Sunday, February 26 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm

1627 North Orange Grove Drive, Sunset Strip/Hollywood Hills, $2.1M
In the thick of things, Hollywood-wise, which may be why this “celebrity-owned” house has been on the market for almost six months and reduced by $150K. The 3-bed, 2.5-bath house is not only walled and gated, but the listing mentions a security system with 13 cameras and intercoms. Which makes this otherwise lovely house sound “under siege.” Built in 1922, there’s also a 1-bed, 1-bath guest house and great landscaping. Open Sunday, February 26 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm
