Design Buzz: The Birds and the Eames Stationery

The appeal of a handwritten note hasn’t totally been lost. For Jacqueline Schmidt, artist and designer behind Screech Owl Design, it’s a concept that is still very much alive. Celebrating both modern design and nature, Schmidt combines organic and urban imagery when creating her eco-friendly correspondence cards.

Hand-drawn and rendered by Schmidt, the collection of printed note cards, postcards and box sets feature a world in which wildlife and midcentury modern furniture go hand-in-hand. Printed on toasted oatmeal colored recycled stock, an Eagle Owl balances on an Eames Rocker in one postcard collection while a Black-Chinned Sparrow perches on a walnut winged bench in another.

Orchids, owls and dolls mix with modern credenzas and other sleek Danish designs in other stationery offerings like the Walnut Furniture Collection as well as limited edition silkscreen prints. Best of all? All of Screech Owl Design’s paper products are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper or tree free 100% cotton paper recovered form scraps that look just as deluxe as their non-recycled counterparts.

Screech Owl Design is carried in SoCal boutiques and paper goods stores such as Clover, 2756 Rowena Avenue, LA; Colcha, 1416 Abbey Kinney Blvd., Venice; and Black Market, 429 E. 1st Street, Long Beach.
