Obsessed with fabulously chunky Bakelite accessories? Get ready to spend big. This Sunday, West Hollywood’s Bonhams 1793 will auction off an impressive collection of stylish and whimsical Bakelite and Lucite jewelry.
Invented in the early 1900s, Bakelite was the first synthetic plastic that could be produced in almost any color and shape. More than 80 examples of the collectible resin will be on auction as part of the Period Art & Design sale at Bonhams. Check out a preview of the collection this Friday and Saturday, May 18 – 19. Items will include chunky bracelets, beaded necklaces and animal-shaped brooches in evocative colors, such as apple juice, root beer and butterscotch.
Period Art & Design Sale, May 20, 7601 Sunset Blvd., LA, bonhams.com.
