Getaway: The Design-Lover’s Guide to HealdsburgAuthor:Annette Hanami
In the town of Healdsburg, at the heart of northern Sonoma wine country, you’ll not only discover the art of wine-making, but the inspired art in cuisine, fashion, décor and design.
Jewelry is not the only art on display at Gallery Lulo, where many of the 40 designers are also accomplished artists in a variety of media. New collections of their design-based jewelry, décor and crafts are launched with stylish gallery openings. 303 Center Street, Healdsburg
The fabulous Tallulah boutique puts the eye-candy in personal and home accessories, like this Hermes silk scarf framed as art. Like Tallulah Bankhead’s inspired life, the merchandise is constantly evolving, but the essence of glam endures. 226B Healdsburg Avenue, Healdsburg
Vintage industrial meets reclaimed art at 14 feet. This eye-popping home décor shop features vintage and hand-crafted furniture, lighting, found objects and more, produced largely by local artisans from reclaimed materials. Like highly-curated art, the collection is accompanied by hand-written labels that pay homage to each work and artist. 325 Center Street, Healdsburg
Recycling is the theme at ReHealdsburg. Partners Peter Rosson and David Barrett collect a wide-range of constantly changing consignments from the city and wine country, making their periodic sales a real treasure hunt. 1229 Grove Street, Healdsburg
From the most modern green hotel to a 19th century grand dame, Healdsburg hotels ooze character.
LEED Gold certified h2hotel casts a zen feeling with organic décor, nature-filled art and plenty of water bars to restore. The rooms have a fresh and airy feel with 11 foot ceilings and lots of light. If you’d like a room with a patio, ask for the second floor! 219 Healdsburg Avenue, Healdsburg
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Madrona Manor is less than a mile due west of Healdsburg Plaza, yet one feels completely in the country in this peaceful property surrounded by vineyards and formal gardens. 1001 Westside Road, Healdsburg
Owner Jil Hales puts the art of local cuisine on the plate at Barndiva, where the gorgeous dishes, and her blog Eat the View, pay homage to the farmers who grow and raise their provisions. 231 Center St., Healdsburg
The tribute to local artisans continues next door at the art gallery Studio Barndiva.
Each dish by Chef Jesse Mallgren of Michelin-starred Madrona Manor is a mouth-watering work of art, such as this colorful vignette above of roasted and carpaccio carrots with rye crumbles and tarragon green goddess. The vibrant flavors derive from their own 3/4 acre culinary garden, the vivid colors from natural light cast on the broad dining veranda.
Variety is the dilemma when visiting wineries in Healdsburg, at the crossroads of Dry Creek Valley for old-vine zinfandel, northern Russian River Valley for pinot noir and Alexander Valley for cabernet sauvignon. But when they’re this close, you can explore them all.
Seghesio Family Vineyards, located right in town, is worth the visit for its signature zinfandel and Italian varietal wines. On weekends, Seghesio offers elevated food and wine pairings with their Family Tables program. 700 Grove Street, Healdsburg
Head 5 miles east of downtown Healdsburg to Medlock Ames for Bordeaux varietal wines and gorgeous views of culinary gardens, old oaks and vineyards beyond. 3487 Alexander Valley Road, Healdsburg
Taste a flight of expressive Russian River Valley pinot noir at VML Winery about 5 miles west of downtown Healdsburg, and stroll through one of the prettiest gardens around. 4035 Westside Road, Healdsburg
