Antiques ahoy! The 2012 San Francisco Fall Antiques Show is dropping anchor at the Fort Mason Center Festival Pavilion October 25-28. The pirate talk isn’t just because the thought of antique booty makes us feel all swarthy, it’s because the SF antiques show will have a nautical theme inspired by the iconic America’s Cup, hosted by San Francisco in 2013. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, which has imbued classical ballet with celebrated cultural traditions since 1982, premieres a program in collaboration with visual artist Jim Campbell and mezzo-soprano Maya Lahyani. The performance, staged at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, features Lahyani’s live vocal accompaniment and 1,000 LED-illuminated spheres, which are programmed to synchronize with the dancers’ movements. Urbanites can take a hint from Small Skyscraper, a large-scale prototype of a hypothetical dwelling by Los Angeles artist Chris Burden, on exhibit at One Colorado. Burden’s 35-foot-tall aluminum version of a modern-day log cabin has 400 square feet of living space and challenges the traditional notion of a residential urban dwelling. Through Nov. 11, 24 E. Gwen Samuels, a Santa Monica artist, weaves identity into architectural fashion for “Dress Code,” her exhibit at theLois Lambert Gallery. Samuels prints geometric shapes and colorful patterns onto transparencies and then hand stitches the thin sheets into dresses that, when displayed en masse on gallery walls, evoke a showroom for adult-sized dress-up.
