Design Daily: SoLA’s LA-inspired Glassware
Author:Sarah Virginia WhiteThe city of Los Angeles inspired a new line of modern memorabilia under the moniker SoLA, or Sisters of Los Angeles. The collection includes LA-branded iPhone cases, mugs, and playing cards, but I’m especially digging the neon neighborhood glassware.
Advertising beloved beaches and canyons such as Venice, Sunset and Laurel, the pop art tumblers beg for bright, boozy drinks. If you think lime green and purple is a genius color combination, top up your Topanga with mojitos and margaritas. Since my signature drink is the blood red and bitter Negroni (recipe below), however, I’m reaching for the dandelion yellow Sunset glass to complement it. If you drink your hooch neat, good news: The barware comes as both shot glasses and 11-ounce rocks glasses.
The collection was designed by three LA-based “sisters”: architect Barbara Bestor, author of the book Bohemian Modern: Living in Silver Lake; product developer Karen Alweil; and fashion publicist Sara Stein. Find SoLA goodies at local boutiques from San Diego to Santa Monica, including love & aesthetics in San Diego, Kitson in LA, Yolk in Silverlake, Post 26 Boutique in Santa Monica, and Tuvalu in San Juan Capistrano, to name a few.
To make a Negroni:
This Italian cocktail is the perfect aperitif, and since it’s made with equal parts booze, booze and booze, it’s impossible to screw up.
- Combine equal parts gin, sweet Vermouth (my personal favorite is Dolin Rouge) and Campari over ice.
- Stir, then strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
- Garnish with an orange peel.
