Design Daily: Artextural’s Rattan Lounge

Author:

It’s winter in San Francisco, and I know that because of my inexorable and untimely attraction to anything that makes me think of warm, heavy ocean breezes and tropical climes. Artextural’s Merella lounge, made from sinuous strips of laminated rattan, fits the bill.

My eyes happily trace the beautful lines of the chair, but as a fan of sustainable design, I also appreciate that it’s made from natural coco rattan, a lightweight and quick-growing material similar to bamboo. For the Merella lounge, which is also available as a double, artisans shape flexible strips of the material into this undulating form before it’s laminated. I’m clearly a fan, and I’m not the only one who’s taking note of the Los Angeles company’s handcrafted imports: You can spot singer Ciara lounging on Artexturals’ glowing rattan lamp table in her music video for “Never Ever,” or try the furniture on for size among the Missoni throws and Philippe Starck-designed headphones at Ron Robinson | Fred Segal in Santa Monica.

For an in-depth look into the story behind each piece, Artextural president and creative director Janelle de Leon Pimentel invites visitors to make an appointment at the showroom in downtown LA. It’s open to the public and sure to offer you something for those California winters—mild though they might be—than make you want to bring the outdoors in.
