Design Daily: Pic-Nic Outdoor Chair by Christian Vivanco

Author:

It might not be outdoor season in San Francisco, but the Pic-Nic chair by designer Christian Vivanco makes an al fresco evening seem appropriate no matter the weather.

In creating this poplar-wood chair, Vivanco captured the silhouette of the classic rattan baskets used for outdoor picnics. The similarities to the beloved container go beyond shape, however—the space below the seat also functions as convenient storage for books, extra candles or cushions for your patio.

As someone with too many things (and too few functional things), I appreciate how Vivanco’s translation maintained the utility of the object that inspired his work. Check out his studio site to see more of his clean, functional designs for everything from bike handles to lighting, all built out of his studio in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Vivanco designed Pic-Nic for the Studio Roca in Mexico city. Fans of the adorable diminutive design can email studiorocadiez@studioroca.com for export to California.
