Design Daily: Boca Do Lobo Newton Table
Author:Sarah Virginia WhiteI’ve never seen anything like this incredible, textured Newton table from Boca do Lobo, currently on display at the Parisian design extravaganza Maison & Objet. Of all the things I’ve spotted during my online stalking (alas, I’m observing from afar), it’s the first thing I wanted to reach out and touch—the creative use of material is just so surprising.
The limited-edition Newton, designed in three different versions by the Portuguese company, isn’t at all what it appears. The cross-sectioned wood pattern of each halved sphere? Those are brass circles carved with incredibly lifelike detail. Each circle is set into a brass sphere, some of which are lacquered in high-gloss black, and some of which are plated in gold.
There are two additional versions, and I truly can’t decide which is more astonishingly beautiful. One features a similar black base of lacquered spheres with a surface of walnut-root veneer, but the other is a stunning standout with a gold-plated base and a myrtle burl veneer.
Inspired by Newton’s law of gravity, the table is meant to allude to the attraction of spheres based on their mass, force or energy. (My physics skills are a little rusty, but I see where they’re going with this). All I know is that this table is sure to attract a crowd, and measuring approximately 102 inches long by 56 inches wide, it can seat many of them as well.
