Who better to capture the female form than female artists? The Looking Glass: Refraction through the Female Gaze at San Francisco’s Mirus Gallery is a new show filled with artwork by women artists, including Kimberly Brooks, Rachel Walker, and Claire Pestaille. Rather than traditional paintings and portraits of women, the artists in this exhibition show women in many different lights, such as hunters, movie stars, and ordinary people. Runs through March 2, Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, Mirus Gallery, 540 Howard Street.
Always wanted to design your own succulent planter but wasn’t sure how? The San Francisco Botanical Garden is hosting a Succulent Wall Garden Workshop to teach people how to create a living piece of art. Using diverse and colorful succulents grown in the botanical garden’s nursery, instructors will help participants design a planter in a wooden box to take home. The workshop is on February 23 from 10am to 2pm. San Francisco Botanical Garden, Golden Gate Park, entrance is at the corner of 9th Avenue at Lincoln Way.
A handful of young Mexican artists are displaying their take on the chili pepper at a new exhibition in The Gallery at the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco. Pop-up Spicy Mexican Design is full of drawings, paintings, and installations where these emerging artists look at their own Mexican identity through the lens of a chili pepper. Runs through March 3, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 2pm, The Gallery at the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco, 532 Folsom Street.
Donna J. Wan’s new series of photographs at San Francisco’s Gallery Carte Blanche beautifully captures the immensity and importance of water. Without being overtly political, WaterLand aims to show how water plays a part in everyone’s lives—the images range from massive landscapes of boat-filled ports to kids playing in swimming holes. Open reception is February 15, 6 to 9pm. Runs through March 27, open everyday 11am to 7pm expect Tuesdays. Gallery Carte Blanche, 973 Valencia Street.
