Hot Finds Abound at the New Hammer & Spear Store in LAAuthor:Marcia Prentice
Hammer and Spear has been open less than two months, yet during their grand opening party the checkout line was out the door. Design enthusiasts are going crazy for the small finds co-owners Kristan Cunningham and Scott Jarrell have picked up on road trips, such as Native American spears and a clawfoot tub (which, it turns out, is from a brothel). Everything in Hammer and Spear has a story, and Kristan Cunningham, who is also an interior designer, is happy to walk patrons through the entire store to give some background on each item.
Hammer and Spear has a fantastic location in the downtown Los Angeles arts district, right across from the famous architecture school, Sci-Arc, and in very close proximity to the fashion and design school, FIDM. The store caters to architects and designers, and since Kristan was trained as a draftsman, their store also carries cool mechanical pencils and stationary imported from other countries. Hammer and Spear additionally has a small section of sewing accessories, pet collars and leases made by a company that supports rescue shelters. One could literally spend hours in the store going through all the unique décor, art, lighting, and furniture. I think a second visit is in store very soon!
