Design Daily: The Helix Collection by Chris Hardy

When Atlanta-based designer Chris Hardy was approached by Design Within Reach for a custom commission, he got a clear idea of what the company wanted—a series of tables that incorporated walnut, brass and a warm stone top. After Hardy created a stunning material-blocked base, however, no one could bear to cover it up. “I did a sketch of just the base, and the problem was that you couldn’t see it with a stone top, so instead we used glass to emphasize it,” says Hardy in a video about his sleek design.

The sketch blossomed into a family of occassional tables called the Helix Collection, which launched this May at WantedDesign in New York. The sculptural form takes shape thanks to its asymmetrical, cast-brass skeleton, which radiates out to three supporting legs. For larger pieces, such as the coffee tables with square, oval and round tops, Hardy simply doubles the number of brass bases.

I love the fluidity of the design, and would welcome it on an even larger scale—as a dining table, for example. But for now, I’m loving the collection of side and coffee tables, which start at $1,400 and are available at DWR
