Artist John Robshaw returns from each of his adventures abroad with a newfound appreciation for unique printing techniques. Robshaw’s early interest in photography and painting, coupled with his printmaking experience in college, set the stage for his study abroad experience in China, where he studied Chinese block printing at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. The printmaker became enamored with block printing on textiles during a trip to India while studying for his MBA in painting. He fell in love with the country, the people, and the free-spirited indigenous technique.

Although artists have been putting wood to canvas since 3000 B.C.E., the process is believed to have been perfected in India around the twelfth century and then honed into the well-known art form by the seventeenth century by chippas, families of artisans who stamp and print. Using dyes from natural sources like pomegranate rind, turmeric, and even horseshoes, printers press handcarved patterns into rugs and cloths that are later created into home decor accessories. Follow Robshaw as he weaves a story that recounts his artistic journeys through the intricate world of block printing.
