San Francisco locals may have been sad to say goodbye to SOMA district staple RADIUS Restaurant & Café when it closed its doors after a five year run in February. But the mourning period didn’t last long as the space quickly transformed into two new hotspots: Carafe, a café with a slightly more sophisticated wine bar feel, and El Capitan, a vibrant neighborhood restaurant offering Latin and Caribbean-inspired flavors.
Classically-trained head chef Mark Furr brings 20 years of experience to the El Capitan kitchen, including two years as a sushi chef for the Fairmont hotel group, a stint as chef/owner of Smoke BBQ, and most recently, a successful run as executive chef at Broken Record.
Furr’s El Capitan menu offers a wide range of flavorful options for all palettes. Small plates include delicacies like ceviches, crudos, grilled octopus, plantains, and Navajo tacos, while family-style platters include hearty choices like whole fish and suckling pig.
Beverage options are plentiful as well, and more choices are on the way. The restaurant will soon upgrade to a full bar, but currently offers 10 taps of craft beer, carafes of sangria, and a lengthy wine list.
El Capitan’s spacious interior accommodates groups large and small. The main dining room comfortably seats 95 people, and the cozy Captain’s Room serves up to 35. Those looking for an outdoorsy dining experience can also opt for the patio, which seats 20 and can accommodate up to 40 for a cocktail reception.
