The Agenda: The Broad Museum’s Grand Opening, Santa Barbara Home and Garden Show, and Breguet Watchmaking ExhibitAuthor:Allison McCarthy
The highly anticipated downtown LA museum designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro finally opens its doors to the public this weekend with free admission. The 120,000-square-foot, $140-million building features two floors of gallery space showcasing nearly 2,000 works of postwar and contemporary art, but half of the draw here is the awe-inspiring building itself. The signature “veil” wrapping the museum is a structural exoskeleton made up of 2,500 fiberglass reinforced concrete panels and 650 tons of steel that drape the building and appear to lift up at the north and south corners, revealing two street-level entrances. The “oculus” on the Grand Avenue side of the structure appears as a large indentation, and a central “vault” will house the collections and lending library. Inside, undulating walls are finished in gray Venetian plaster and skylights on the third-floor exhibit space complement the veil pattern of the facade.
When: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sun. 9/20
Where: 221 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles
Tune in to fine craftsmanship and follow the history of Abraham-Louis Breguet, more affectionately known as “the father of modern horology” in this exhibit that traces the beginnings of watchmaking technology. The company, which has earned a reputation for ingenuity over the years, can be thanked for the self-winding watch, the first-ever wristwatch, the repeating mechanism, and the tourbillon—a revolutionary development in counteracting gravity’s effects on the pocket watch. You’ll gain a whole new appreciation for the timepieces we often take for granted.
When: Sat. 9/19 – Sun. 1/10/16
Where: Legion of Honor, 100 34th Ave., San Francisco
Homeowners, take note. This is your chance to connect with interior designers, contractors, and remodeling experts during Santa Barbara’s only home show. School yourself in earth-friendly upgrades for your property and scoop up drought-tolerant plants, from SB county’s Horticultural Society sale, to spruce up your yard.
When: Sat. 9/26–Sun. 9/27
Where: Earl Warren Showgrounds, 3400 Calle Real, Santa Barbara
This is your chance to fully embrace an eco-friendly lifestyle. Sustainability is the name of the game at this festival, where you’ll have access to industry leaders, top-of-the-line green products, and programs about the newest recycling and energy-saving practices to integrate in your own home.
When: Fri. 9/25 – Sun. 9/27
Where: LA Convention Center, 1201 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles
