The Agenda: The Broad Museum’s Grand Opening, Santa Barbara Home and Garden Show, and Breguet Watchmaking Exhibit
Author:Lindsey ShookGrand Opening
The highly anticipated downtown LA museum designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro finally opens its doors to the public this weekend with free admission. The 120,000-square-foot, $140-million building features two floors of gallery space showcasing nearly 2,000 works of postwar and contemporary art, but half of the draw here is the awe-inspiring building itself. The signature “veil” wrapping the museum is a structural exoskeleton made up of 2,500 fiberglass reinforced concrete panels and 650 tons of steel that drape the building and appear to lift up at the north and south corners, revealing two street-level entrances. The “oculus” on the Grand Avenue side of the structure appears as a large indentation, and a central “vault” will house the collections and lending library. Inside, undulating walls are finished in gray Venetian plaster and skylights on the third-floor exhibit space complement the veil pattern of the facade.

The company, which has earned a reputation for ingenuity over the years, can be thanked for the self-winding watch, the first-ever wristwatch, the repeating mechanism, and the tourbillon—a revolutionary development in counteracting gravity’s effects on the pocket watch. You’ll gain a whole new appreciation for the timepieces we often take for granted.
