Designer Crush: Melinda Ritz

1. Who is your biggest role model?

I have several role models. I admire people who are creative and use their talent to its fullest potential of expression.

2. Which movie or play do you wish you could have designed the set for?

I wish I could have designed the set for Mildred Pierce, starring Joan Crawford. I love the 40s and everything about that time period. I would have also liked to design the set for the remake of American Gigolo. I would have gone over the top 1980’s design.

3. What is the best way to gauge a client’s personality before starting a project?

Personal style tells me a lot about personality so I’m always interested to get to know my clients’ tastes in fashion and what makes them comfortable – down to the shoes!

4. What new design trends are you excited to integrate into your work?

I like big, open, light-filled rooms with unstructured furniture arrangements to allow space for lots of interaction. I recently partnered with Golden Oak, the luxury real estate development at Walt Disney World Resort, and the homes were made for hosting friends and family. Lush landscapes and nature preserves surround the private community and I gravitate toward that same essence of what the earth brings in my own work. With a few small touches – think fresh blooms and elegant candlelight – you can turn every indoor and outdoor space of your home into an entertainment destination.

5. How do you completely unwind?

If I’m not at the spa, you’ll find me antique shopping and attending art shows.

6. If you hadn’t become a designer, which career would you have pursued?

If I hadn’t become a designer, I think I would have become a food critic. What a job!

7. What’s the worst pre-designer job you’ve ever had and why?

In my youth, I used to read law books to an attorney who was blind. He wasn’t the biggest fan of me which made for some difficult sessions.

8. What’s your favorite recipe?

A BLT. All of the ingredients are in the name!

9. Create your perfect playlist for us.

I’m old-school disco all the way with some country thrown in the mix, and a dash of blues.

Lightning round!

10. Would you rather shop new or vintage?

For clothing, new. For design, vintage

11. First celebrity crush?

Robert Redford

12. What’s your hidden talent?

I’m double jointed in my pinky and index finger on my right hand. Is that a talent??

13. Best restaurant in your area? Where is it?

Atch-Kotch. It’s a Japanese spot located in a strip mall in Hollywood. Unassuming and one of my favorites!

14. SF or LA?

Always San Francisco. I like wearing winter clothes year round.
