While the buzz around Los Angeles has been focused on the developments in downtown, Culver City’s been quietly gaining ground as a design center. Platform, a collection of shops and restaurants including Linda Yarrow, Aesop and Velvet by Graham & Spencer has opened in the Hayden Tract and just this week, a Kohler Signature Store, Australia’s Harbour Outdoor and international lighting manufacturer, Louis Poulsen, opened stores in the Helms Bakery District.

To celebrate, this Saturday, May 21st, the Helms Bakery District pulls out the stops with This Modern Life, a design field day featuring workshops, demonstrations, tastings, sweepstakes, and more.  Find vintage treasures for your home at a one day only Charish pop-up; get decor tips on how to arrange your space from Homepolish’s one day pop-up; participate in a design dialogue about the intersection of design and technology, “Does Easier Mean Better?”; and get fashion tips from Trunk Club to spruce up your wardrobe.  Naturally, there will be food, including hot dogs from Let’s Be Frank, design-inspired cuisine from The New School of Cooking and pastries from the Helms Bakery truck.  And you don’t even have to take your car. To debut the opening of the Expo Line‘s extension to Santa Monica, LA Metro will be offering free rides this weekend.  For more information, including a full list of events and a downloadable map: This Modern Life
