Renovation

Monarch Beach Resort

Dana Point has a hot new social scene thanks to the $40 million facelift at the Monarch Beach Resort (formerly the St. Regis). L.A.-based Rodrigo Vargas Design refreshed the 400 guest rooms in a coastal-inspired palette of cool blues, greens, and crisp whites. Balconies off every room and suite are appointed with modern patio furniture, and first-floor rooms even feature private fire pits. The ocean blue lobby, completed by San Francisco’s Puccini Group, is filled with art, and the expansive pool area looks like luxury on the Mediterranean. In honor of the revamp, the hotel is offering guests a special Rediscover Monarch Beach package. We can’t think of a better reason to take a weekend trip down to SoCal.

Exhibit

“Family Tree”

For 20 years, L.A. artist Mark Bennett has been drafting architectural blueprints of famous TV world homes—from The Dick Van Dyke Show to The Brady Bunch. He draws these fictional dwellings from memory, right down to the minutiae of the characters’ everyday lives. This exhibit of new work, his first in L.A. in more than a decade, updates some of his classics and explores new territories including film. Standout pieces include “The Home of Norman Bates,” “Gilligan’s Island,” and “Wayne Manor.”

Relocation

Berggruen Gallery

Just last month, John Berggruen and his wife-partner Gretchen relocated their namesake San Francisco gallery from its longtime digs in Union Square to a swanky new SoMa address right across from the newly expanded SFMOMA. The three-story 1908 brick building has been overhauled on the inside by Jennifer Weiss Architecture and nicely complements the Snohetta-designed behemoth of modern art across the way.
