I Want Candy: SUGE, Maayan Zilberman Open Wednesday At Palevsky
Author:Abigail Stone
L.A.’s new, roving, experimental gallery FURTH YASHAR & is proud to present their second show SUGE at Palevsky, with an opening reception this Wednesday, June 14th, from 6-9 pm, and continuing through the summer.

The series of crystalline sculptures created from sugar by artist Maayan Zilberman resemble precious gemstones, mined from the earth. Sparkling and vibrant, the playful pieces poke at long-held assumptions about art, sustenance, ceremony and commerce.

Zilberman, who studied sculpture at NY’s School of Visual Arts and San Francisco’s Art Insitute, turned to the kitchen and its alternative materials in lieu of a studio, letting the unusual space lead her in experiment directions, free from expectations. With this new work, she unapologetically questions conventional material boundaries for fine art, while pushing the medium of candy-making to its edge. Whimsical and alluring, her work speaks to a delectable sense of spirituality [crystals being the mystical objects du jour], coming of age and the ephemeral nature of beauty.
