The 2018 Furniture Society Conference Hits San Francisco June 14-16Author:Michelle Konstantinovsky
Ready to get your craft knowledge on? The Furniture Society (a.k.a. the industry’s top educational organization), will host its next conference “NEXUS: Perspectives on Art, Design, Craftsmanship, and Technology“ at Dogpatch Studios in San Francisco from June 14-16, 2018.
The event is intended for anyone interested in buiding their knowledge on, well, built goods: designers, makers, artists, gallerists, collectors, retailers, and students are all invited to discover what’s next for the industry in an increasingly digital world. Through presentations, panels, interactive workshops, tours, and informal social events, the conference will cover topics including the role of women in the craft, technology and design; sustainability; advanced materials; collaboration between designers and makers; shifting consumption patterns; and global craft. Featured speakers include artist/architect/designer Allan Wexler (capstone speaker) and designer/builder/educator and founder of Project H Design and Girls Garage Emily Pilloton (keynote presenter).
NEXUS will also feature three exhibits: NEXUS: The Exhibition, taking place at ShopFloor Design in Dogpatch, is a juried exhibit of work by members of the Furniture Society, including Justin Bailey, Chance Coalter, San Francisco’s Fyrn, The Krenov School, Po Shun Leong, Marcus Papay of Papay Designs, and Jordan Waraksa of Fiddle and Hammer. This exhibit is curated by Derek Chen of Council Design, Jennifer Jones of Niche Interiors, independent curator Jennifer Navva-Milliken and independent curator/art consultant Julie Muniz. The second exhibit, entitled Thinking Through Making, takes place at CCA Hubbell Street Galleries, features work by the students, faculty, and alumni from California College of the Arts. The third exhibit, entitled RAW DESIGN features work by Dominic Di Mare and Judy Kensley McKie, and is at the Museum of Craft and Design.
