When it comes to modern bathroom design, how do you define luxury and glamour? Lauren Goldman of l’oro designs in San Francisco challenged herself to think outside the box to answer that question while designing a master bathroom for a home in Mill Valley. The goal was to echo the sleek, contemporary feel of the home’s architecture while creating a spa-like retreat that felt sumptuous and elegant. Gray Ogassian concrete field tiles from Ann Sacks in a 3-D pentagonal shape used on both the floor and on the walls pulled in the home’s durable finishes and angular lines. “The bathroom was meant to evoke a serene feeling with its natural stone and the clean lines of the fixtures,” says Goldman.
To complement the cement tile’s unusual shape and smooth texture, she chose the subtle flourish of Dornbracht’s sleek Cyprum copper fixtures. “We wanted them to enhance the tile but not overtake it,” she explains. A simple floating vanity from The Furniture Guild adds lightness. The relationship of the elements— the delicate rose gold fittings, the bathroom cabinet’s natural wood stain, the stone’s surface—creates a harmonious juxtaposition of textures that blends with the landscape seen just outside the windows. The sculptural Spin Lights designed by Lucie Koldová for Lasvit, hung asymmetrically, put the final punctuation on a space that is both beautiful, practical and intriguing.
