“The values of HKB are to spread contagious energy, listen intently, embolden spaces, cultivate strong relationships, value ideas over hierarchy and operate methodically while designing spaces beyond boundaries,” says Heather K. Bernstein. The team enhanced the vibe of a 300-square-feet pool house for a young family with two boys who love the outdoors. “This space is a direct reflection on them and how they live, lots of outdoor/pool time,” she notes.

Set in the mountains of Ross, the pool provides endless views of the surrounding, lush landscape while also providing ample opportunity for sunbathing. “Under the pool used to be a storage space that left their cushions covered in mold,” says Bernstein. “They wanted a usable space with a changing room and full bath where they could change for the pool or use the large counter and sink for the cutting garden just outside.”

The client’s main request was to waterproof the entire space so that there was lower maintenance and increased modernity to complement the main structure. “Tile floor to ceiling was a no brainer,” says the designer. “We loved embracing the curve of the pool and therefore the pool house space below. Finding the perfect tile for the floors and walls was a fun challenge.”

“Our mission is to empower anyone who engages with the brand to purposefully draw outside the lines to ensure no two spaces mimic the other or identify with common design molds,” says Bernstein. They achieved their unique goal and curated an outdoor space that gave the family a useable space that was both beautiful and functional.
