Founded in 1974 in Miami, Florida by Nasir and Nargis Kassamali, Luminaire is regarded as the premiere source for vanguard International design in the States. Expanding their reach across the country, which began with a store in Chicago, they’ve now touched down in Los Angeles. Housed in a building on the corner of Clark Drive and Beverly Boulevard in the middle of West Hollywood’s tony design district, that was originally constructed in the 60s, it’s been reimagined by Nasir Kassamali, in conjunction with Los Angeles-based studio MAKE. The metalwork on the facade reflects the brand’s Miami roots while inside, the soaring 21,000 square foot space two storey space has been arranged in a series of vignettes that highlight Luminaire’s design philosophy utilizing some of their best-selling pieces.

For, despite its size, the cavernous showroom is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to displaying the breadth and depth of the lines Luminaire carries which range from the well-known to the newly-discovered. The Kassamalis long-standing mean that, alongside the expected pieces from such legendary names as Cassina, Cappellini, Living Divani and Moroso, Luminaire is able to offer designs created and sold exclusively for the store as well as introducing new lines from recent discoveries including Sollos by Jader Almeida and sleek kitchen designs by Minimal, as well as vintage finds picked up by Nasir and Nargis Kassamali on their travels.

In addition to furniture, the showroom features an expansive collection of accessories, a compelling assortment of lighting from such brands as Ingo Maurer and Davide Groppi, rugs and a highly curated selection of art pieces, including sculptural wood objects by Christoph Finkel, created from fallen trees discovered in the Swiss Alps. There’s even a design bookstore in partnership with ARTBOOK, a retail division of specialty art and design literary distributor, Distributed Art Publishers “D.A.P.” as well as a unique scent that ensures that the experience of Luminaire is truly multi-dimensional.

But, Luminaire is more than just a store; they pride themselves on being a one-stop shop for all your design needs, with services, ranging from space planning and interior design to closet fittings and architectural services.
