Ace Hotel Hits Kyoto Next Spring

Author:

Since 1999, Ace Hotels have popped up in cities across the United States and Europe, earning a reputation as the urban cultural hubs of major metropolises. In spring of 2020, Ace will make its Asia debut, opening the doors of its Kyoto, Japan outpost.

Designed in collaboration with long-time Ace partner, award- winning Commune Design and legendary architect, Kengo Kuma, Ace Hotel Kyoto is located in a building infused with history, but with a modern twist. The structure, a 1926 building once home to Kyoto Central Telephone Company, features sections of a new build as well, which comprise the SHIN-PUH- KAN Redevelopment Project incorporating a large ground floor marketplace in the city — all cohesively designed by Kuma.

Ace Hotel Kyoto marks the fourth design collaboration between Atelier Ace and Commune Design, including Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs, Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles and Ace Hotel Chicago.

The interiors of the hotel draw inspiration from East and West, incorporating elements of Japanese aesthetics and values inspired by Western thought leaders Charlotte Perriand and JB Blunk. The hotel also worked closely with local artists and craftsmen to outfit the interiors with organic and hand-crafted works that speak to American and Japanese culture and design.
