Izzy’s is Back

A beloved San Francisco institution has been thoughtfully reimagined

On the heels of a six-month historic preservation and renovation, Izzy’s Steak & Chops—the nearly four-decades-old dining institution in San Francisco’s Marina District—is buzzing once more. Whether partaking of the house-made prime rib ravioli, glazed crullers or espresso martini, the steakhouse fare and classic cocktails are as enticing as ever. Now, thanks to New York-based design studio GACHOT’s first-ever undertaking in the city, guests can also marvel at the elegant interiors that nod to the legacy of the second-generation family-owned establishment.

 The 4,800-square-foot restaurant, which can seat 146 across two levels, is housed in a former post office. Beyond its vintage-inspired door pulls await the main dining area’s wooden floors, high ceilings, refurbished furnishings and original light fixtures. Taking pride of place on the first floor is artist Matthew Benedict’s wraparound mural, which celebrates San Francisco’s Barbary Coast era and depicts characters and scenes that evoke the early 20th century. Entitled “The Time of Your Life,” it is a tribute to namesake Izzy Gomez, a saloon owner who, in the 1940s, Life magazine dubbed one of the city’s most colorful characters. (Izzy’s late founder, Sam DuVall, appears in the commissioned artwork.)

 The interior design’s focus on art continues with original archival pieces arranged alongside newer works curated by contemporary artist Paul Rusconi. The displays enliven the walls above the downstairs banquettes, which are upholstered in sumptuous leather and include Izzy’s signature two-top booths — the very definition of coziness. Wood paneling, woven seat backs and sheer café curtains lend texture and charm.

 On the mezzanine level, Rusconi’s curation encompasses a gallery-like presentation. Among the elements contributing to GACHOT’s timeless design upstairs are vintage sideboards, bronzed mirrors and tufted seating. Diners are understandably drawn to the stone-clad fireplace lounge, which is appointed with herringbone oak floors, a custom coffee table featuring an inset ebonized oak top, a sofa covered in a bespoke textile and cinnamon-hued armchairs.  

Meanwhile, the bar—another focal point of the main dining room—allures with restored milk-glass pendant lights that cast a gentle glow. Rift-cut wood and checkered marble floors further warm up the space. For legions of locals, since its debut in 1987, Izzy’s has conjured special moments. The revamped venue is poised to do the same for generations to come.
