South Beach is known for fabulous food and flirty fun. And now, there is even more reason to flock the the tropical destination—dinner at Uchiko. Owned and operated by Hai Hospitality, the original concept—Uchi—opened in Austin in 2003. Fast forward to 2024, after several new locations and successes, Uchiko brings Miami Beach’s vibrant character to life through a design that fuses tropical brutalism with refined Japanese deco influences.

Designed by women-led, Islyn Studio, design narrative is rooted in hand-crafted details and materials that honor the landscape and the Japanese aesthetic. Concrete softened with stone and shell inlays reflect the shoreline’s rugged beauty, while teak shutters add warmth and tropical richness. Guests are welcomed by a host stand inspired by traditional Japanese thatched roofs, setting the stage for an experience grounded in artistry.

The restaurant that is helmed by James Beard Award‑winning Chef and Owner Tyson Cole, centers around a striking glass block bar—a fantastic focal point that reflects the glow of the natural light throughout the dining room. The private dining room offers a more exclusive experience, enveloped in Japanese drapery and anchored by a carved stone-clad fireplace. Rich textures, subdued lighting, and intimate details transform the space into a sanctuary for events and intimate gatherings. Subtle Japanese influences extend throughout the restaurant, from copper light fixtures and deco-inspired accents to aubergine-hued tile work in the restrooms—each touch reinforcing the theme of thoughtful craftsmanship.

Islyn Studio made every element feel site-specific, weaving together history, materiality and atmosphere to create more than just a dining destination. Uchiko is an immersive journey through light, texture and culture—inviting guests to linger, explore and connect in a setting that feels both timeless and uniquely of its place.
