Nestled high among the hilltops of Mill Valley, California, a Mid-century home carries with it decades of character—and an equal amount of bad remodels. The property had undeniable charm, but the interiors were in need of a modern transformation. That’s where Caitlin Jones Design stepped in, to guide a new floor plan and aesthetic while honoring the original architecture and spirit of the home.

The house itself—a 2,422-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath single-family home—had enormous potential. When the clients brought Jones and her team into the project, their vision was clear: improve the home’s flow, create a sense of openness, and most importantly, design a kitchen worthy of their love for cooking and entertaining. “We want a killer kitchen,” they had said, and the design team took that to heart.

The challenge was significant. A structurally important wall separated the kitchen from the living room, blocking the openness and views. Removing it required extensive work, but it was the key to delivering the clients’s requests. Once opened, the interiors reconnected with the surrounding landscape. Storage was another priority, so the team introduced a new bar with wine storage and a highly functional kitchen design with ample cabinetry. Every detail was carefully considered to balance the demands of daily life with the joy of hosting family and friends.

At the heart of it all was one extraordinary centerpiece: a Lacanche range, the client’s jewel in the kitchen. The team crafted the entire kitchen around it, weaving its color into the cabinetry and layering in stained wood accents. An oak Roll & Hill light fixture added warmth and balance, completing a space that felt equally elevated and inviting.

The finished result radiates warmth, serenity and function for a busy family—flowing seamlessly with its natural surroundings while celebrating its mid-century soul. The clients were thrilled, so much so that the partnership has continued on to their vacation home in Calistoga. This Mill Valley transformation wasn’t just about a remodel. It was about restoring harmony—between architecture and landscape, between function and beauty, between a house and the people who call it home.
