Nash Design Group infuses a Menlo spec home with creativity and character

“Since it started as a spec house, it was really important to make sure it didn’t end up looking like one,” says designer Kendra Nash—founder of Nash Design Group—on a project her firm recently completed for existing clients. “We didn’t want it to feel like other homes in Menlo Park, therefore infusing their personality with graphic elements, making sure that all cabinetry wasn’t the same throughout, and the addition of lighting that suited their taste were ways to keep the ‘spec’ out of this home and bring in the custom.”

Nash and team had a strong relationship with the clients as they had already worked together on a previous project. “These clients are some of the nicest who truly trust us and the process,” she says. “I always say those that don’t resist the design process and try to control it, have the best experiences.” Luckily they purchased the expansive 5,000-square-foot spec home when it was being framed, so the team was more involved in the creative process. “We got to add personal touches to the spaces, but selecting materials, lighting, custom cabinetry details, and even adding a pool,” she recalls. “Though it is a custom home, we make sure that in the end, the selections will appeal to a potential buyer down the road. This is not the clients forever home, as they have their sights set on more land down the road.”

Designed by G’Lush Design Group, the home’s architecture leaned modern but the clients wanted a more transitional feeling throughout. “We selected materials throughout that provided texture, neutrality and linear aspects,” says Nash. “Though the lines of the furnishings are relatively neutral and clean, they added a punch of personality with playful patterned fabrics for their window treatments. We added layers to the space with gorgeous art to round out the spaces with their personality.”

The family is not originally from California but was drawn to the Golden State for the pleasant climate that allows for seamless indoor-outdoor living. “The most striking feature of this home is its seamless indoor/outdoor living design, perfectly encapsulating the California lifestyle,” Nash remarks. “With the back door open, residents effortlessly transition between the interior and the covered patio, which boasts a fabulous BBQ space and lounge area. This setup invites relaxation, entertaining, and culinary adventures in a natural extension of the home’s interior.”

Due to the large footprint, Nash and the team were able to curate multiple areas for gathering, including the basement that now features a lounge, bar, wine tasting area and gym. On the day of the install the family was overwhelmed with joy. Nash recalls, “Their eyes lit up as they entered their home on the day of install, and they couldn’t hide their delight. They praised the attention to detail and the cohesive color schemes throughout, expressing genuine appreciation. Witnessing their joy and satisfaction was immensely rewarding, affirming the hard work but the NDG team and dedication put into bringing their vision to life.”
