Let there be Light

While enjoying dinner at a friend’s home, a San Francisco couple was satisfied by more than just a great meal. Upon stepping into the newly designed space, they were mesmerized by the work of Malcom Davis Architecture and inspired to overhaul their own home. The young family with two little girls had been living in their house for several years and not only needed more space and a deeper connection to the neighborhood but a design that would bring in much more light.

When the family originally purchased the home it had been flipped but was lacking character. Davis gutted the Noe Valley home, keeping the traditional facade untouched while opening up the northern walls to add skylights over exposed framing. This new addition allowed for natural light to flood in when the fog leaves the city, creating a play of shadow and light throughout the day.

Davis completely changed the floor plan by incorporating a single sloped roof and 11′ sliding doors on the back of the house, opening the main living spaces and kitchen up to an expansive deck. This new level of indoor-outdoor living that did not exist before, created a much more open plan for the family offering a reinterpreted spaces for both entertaining and relaxing.
