“I believe a truly successful space takes note of the architecture and surroundings. I typically start with interior architecture with the goal of creating a timeless foundation that allows for aesthetic changes over decades,” says designer Travis Grimm about a breathtaking home in Pacific Palisades that he recently transformed for clients he previously worked for on both residential and commercial projects.

Grimm was enlisted to work on the 13,000 square-foot Spanish-style home when it was already in development, and the clients knew they needed his guidance of the final direction the design would take. “My clients had been searching for a property for years, hoping to find something that was truly special, with a breathtaking view,” he recalls. “When this lot became available, though it was tremendously challenging to build on, they knew the views would be worth it.”

Having worked with them many times before, Grimm had a keen sense of how they moved through life. For this home, they wanted a sanctuary to find respite after busy work days, where the ocean took center stage. Additionally, they needed space for entertaining as they have two teenage sons—who are avid surfers—as well as an expansive network of friends they love to host.

“Building in such close proximity to the ocean often requires extensive time and attention to the engineering to ensure the home will last forever,” says Grimm. “When I came on board, the clients were already a full year into their new build, and the home had already been designed and framed. They were having doubts about the Spanish aesthetic, and whether it truly fit the location. I took them to visit another one of my projects for inspiration, and what followed was a monumentally quick conversion from a Spanish style aesthetic to a white bricked, East Coast meets West Coast traditional.”

Inside, the overall interiors are sophisticated, subtle and offer areas of entertainment for their active sons and peaceful escapes for the couple including a spa area equipped with a sauna and hot tub, a separate massage area and gym, and an indoor hot tub with a skylight above, that can be frosted for privacy with the touch of a button. “It’s the epitome of quiet luxury and I could happily retire there each evening for the rest of my life,” Grimm proclaims. “To ensure this space really had something for everyone, we also designed a bar and billiards room, as well as a home theater. The challenge from day one, was to create a space with subtle glamour, that didn’t feel at all like a basement. I think it’s safe to say that we understood the assignment.”

When asked how his long-standing clients felt about their new dream beach house, Grimm remarks, “They were thrilled! This family is truly living in and enjoying their beautiful home and frequently entertain. So for us, mission accomplished.”
