Open House Obsession: Timeless Minimalism In Burlingame, $4.9

Author:

MAK Studio, the award-winning San Francisco based architecture and design practice led by Michael Kao has become known for creating some of the most architecturally compelling residences in the Bay Area. This newly-listed home in Burlingame is no exception, a composition of simple but soaring volumes, perfectly scaled and flooded with light.

Kao wrapped three sides of the living area in a Modernist version of wainscotting, warmly enclosing the space and giving it a firm visual grounding. For some revealing insights into Michael Kao’s approach to architecture, this interview is illuminating.

Retracting Fleetwood walls of glass open each end of the long volume to the outdoors.

Throughout the house, a consistent palette of subtle tones and materials, combined with an incredibly high level of craftsmanship.
