Caftan-Ready Oceanfront Retreat In Malibu, $15.5M
Author:Philip Ferrato
With serious escapism on our minds this week, it’s hard to imagine a better place to land than this serenely Moroccan Style beachfront retreat. An essay in luxe simplicity, it’s the work of designer Michael Lee, and manages to somehow synthesize expat dreams of Morocco, memories of Ibiza, and California beachfront living. The discreetly private street front gives little away, but lets you know there’s something intriguing in there.
Solving the problem of how to treat the inevitable route around the garage on a narrow lot, Lee gave the garage a glass wall. The tiled walkway passes around the garage to become a courtyard and loggia that echoes the traditional Moroccan riad, or townhouse.
Inside, luminous spaces and high ceilings open up directly to the sand though a loggia and a sheltered deck. There’s almost no art and no clutter, and the variety of window openings have a distinct rhythm.
What We Love: The uniform palette throughout never interferes with the setting; the way the pool’s profile mimics the baroque saltillo tiles; all the views are beautifully filtered and framed through multi-paned windows and loggias.
The vaulted kitchen is the entertaining hub– even of you’re just making smoothies– between the pool and the ocean. Plus the wine refrigerator is in the breakfast area. Which we think is a great idea.
A pair of guests suites open directly to the loggia.
Upstairs, the sybaritic master suite spans the ocean side of the house and the spa bath takes things one step further with a fireplace. There’s also an immense dressing room (not shown) and a second bedroom suite on this level.
