Escape in Topanga, $4.5M

Author:

Topanga occupies a very special place in the California legend. High above the coast but within easy striking distance of Malibu and Santa Monica, for decades it’s been a fundamentally bohemian venue for artists, musicians, actors and others looking for a less constrained place to live in the mountains. And so it was for interior designer-to-the-stars LM Pagano, whose multidisciplinary practice extends from the most luxe residences to retail, hospitality and yachts. Her extraordinary Topanga compound, a Post Modern assemblage of stacked cubes and outdoor spaces with views to the ocean, is on the market.

What We Love: Originally designed by architect Thomas Edigi of Tuna Studio Architecture and built in 1990, this sprawling cubist composition on the brow of a hill reminds us of a mini Getty Center, begun in 1989.

Inside, the spaces are no less complex, with changing levels and vistas in every direction.

The six acres encompass an orchard and open fields, plus this sweetly unpretentious structure from the ’60s.

More: Along with matchless views, the 3-bed, 3.5-bath home has a complete solar panel installation, back-up power generator, a saline swimming pool plus a water purification system– and a safe room. Asking $4,500,000; go to the listing for additional images and details, plus a video that really tells the story best.
