Classic 1962 Neutra In Woodland Hills, $3.3M

For the past twenty-two years, Hollywood’s A-lister stylist Jeanne Yang and her husband, the real estate agent Scott Cort, have lavished love and attention on their superbly simple 1962 home by Modernist architect Richard Neutra, also known as the J.N Baldwin House after its original owner. The couple replaced the kitchen and baths and added a pool, but the property retains Neutra’s original sweeping structure and many interior details.

Yang recently told The Hollywood Reporter that The best part of the house to her mind– in addition to Neutra’s signature ribbon windows (meaning windows that go across the length of an entire façade) is the way it’s sited up a long driveway, on a hilltop among mature trees.”

“The individuals who had the house constructed had written a letter to Neutra saying, ‘We don’t know if you’d be interested in making a very humble home for us, but we love your work.’ This was in 1961. He answered their letter and he said, ‘I would do it if I could site the property.’ He was really particular about where he sited everything. So they drove around the neighborhood and picked this spot on a little bit of a hill. One of the most amazing things [today] is that when you are in the living room, you don’t see any houses around. The fact that Neutra knew that 60 years later you’d be able to feel like you were in a treehouse is one example of someone who was a fantastic architect.”

The indoor-outdoor pioneered by Neutra and other Mid-century architects is evident in the living room, where a sweep of ribbon windows over original built-in cabinets looks out onto mature trees.

What We Love: The recent interventions mesh beautifully with well-preserved original details and fixtures.
