With its sensitivity to materials and open spaces under sheltering eaves, the renovation recalls the best work of Harwell Hamilton Harris, another master of elegant Modernist domesticity who apprenticed with Richard Neutra and often worked with Gregory Ain. Harris’ homes are now much coveted throughout L.A., and there would probably be more if he hadn’t decamped for Texas in 1952 to become the Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas. Nonetheless, his influence remained, and we can see it in both this house and its renovation.
What We Love: The uniform palette of materials and color throughout; the exceptional balance of indoor and outdoor spaces; the random bluestone paving on the lower level and the elegantly spare fireplace walls.
