A Magical Henry Hill in Forest Park, $2.4M

Author:

The prolific Bay Area architect Henry Hil [1913-1984] is best known for his beautifully crafted homes, working in what’s usually referred to as the Second Bay Tradition. Like two of the notable San Francisco architects he worked closely with in the 1940s—John Dinwiddie and the esteemed emigre architect Erich Mendelsohn—Hill took a light-handed approach to the redwood dwellings he designed. This c.1956 home in the Forest Hill neighborhood is a perfect example, with a witty throwback reference to Steamship Moderne in the curving bay window that perfectly suits the triangular lot.

Hill excelled in creating architecture within tight constraints, and while this is a fundamentally modest mid-century home, there’s an impeccably simple and elegant two-story stair hall with custom millwork enclosing a wall of glass from a time when that kind of attention to detail was still accessible. With distant views ranging from Twin Peaks to the Marin Headlands, it’s a light-filled house set on a slope within Forest Park, an early master planned neighborhood originally developed in 1912. Remodeled over the years but always impeccably maintained, recent updates have made this rare 4-bed, 3-bath, mid-century home eminently livable.
