Power of Pattern: Central Asian Ikats From the David and Elizabeth Reisbord Collection

History buffs and textile enthusiasts will geek out at LACMA’s new exhibition featuring over 60 examples of Central Asian robes and panels using ikat, a silk threading technique that produces bold, colorful, cloud-like patterns. The distinctive work on display incorporates motifs from daily life and nature, accurately representing how the region’s designers and weavers created unique, abstract works of art.

New Work: Rodney McMillian

The West Coast is on full display in Los Angeles-based artist Rodney McMillian’s exhibition at SFMOMA, through a new series of work including a painted abstract panorama that spans the entirety of the gallery. The exhibit is a full sensory experience, weaving in 1980s songs (performed by McMillian himself) and voiceover narration on social policies and issues.

Bar Shiru

Opening date details are still yet to be announced, but Oakland residents are gearing up for new Uptown hotspot, Bar Shiru. As the Bay Area’s first hi-fi bar, the venue’s high-quality analog sound system will play records while customers sit, socialize, and listen up. Owners Daniel Gahr and Shirin Raza collaborated with Berkeley architecture firm Studio KDA to create a 1,500 square-foot space in Latham Square centered around acoustics. Expect an extensive drink menu courtesy of Adam Stemmler and Joel DiGiorgio of Farm League Restaurant Group including unique twists on classic cocktails, local beer, sake, and more.

Bandcamp IRL

Bandcamp, the renowned online publishing platform for musicians, is finally getting its own brick and mortar space, and the new record store will set up shop in Oakland’s thriving creative arts community. Calling the Fox Theater, The New Parish, and The Paramount Theater its neighbors, Bandcamp IRL will feature a vast array of records, and host future free, all-ages shows as part of an upcoming video series. The opening celebration takes place February 1 at 7 p.m.

Pacifica’s first houseplant boutique is officially opening its doors February 2 with a grand opening party featuring plants, art, workshops, and live music by Alex Gordon. Guests will have the opportunity to browse the goods while enjoying an assortment of refreshments.
