Sub-Zero Debuts the Newest Summer It Accessory: The Designer Undercounter Ice Maker

What’s cooler than being cool? (ice cold). It’s hard to resist the musical (and specifically hip-hop) references, but Sub-Zero’s new Designer Undercounter Ice Maker earns this hype. Call it the unexpected summer hit. Founded in 1945 by Westye F. Bakke, the luxury appliance company has done it again: engineered a product you never knew you needed and suddenly can’t live without. Maybe it’s the Madison, Wisconsin-based team’s up-close familiarity with real icicles that helped crack the code. Because nature is still the best designer, ice in the wild typically comes out clear and crystalline, while most manmade freezers default to cloudy, murky cubes. Not anymore.

This technology, which was developed and stress-tested at the Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove Westye Bakke Center’s innovation facility, delivers the kind of chill mixologists and beverage enthusiasts have only dreamed of. Every detail is dialed in, from the proprietary MaxQuiet sound insulation to the ergonomics of the ice scoop. Even the cube itself is precision designed as a 1.25-inch shape built to improve cooling power and slow dilution.

The Undercounter Ice Maker stores up to 25 pounds and can be dialed up to produce 65 pounds a day, so guests at your summer soirée never run dry. And like every Sub-Zero appliance, it comes panel-ready to disappear into any custom kitchen design scheme, both indoors and out. “We solved the easy-to-clean-and-maintain piece, and because of that, we feel confident this will last 20-plus years,” says Jeff Sweet, Manager of Product Marketing at Sub-Zero. “We checked all the boxes, and we’re very excited about this product.” All that’s left is your curated summer playlist—ice-themed or otherwise.
