Australian-based Coco Republic throws open the doors to their flagship furniture emporium in San Francisco, bringing their well-designed, well-constructed and well-priced offerings stateside

Australian furniture brand, Coco Republic, has formally launched in California with a stunning three-story store just off Union Square in San Francisco. They’d previously tested the waters here, showcasing pieces from their extensive line of sophisticated competitively-priced outdoor furniture at HD Buttercup in Los Angeles. “I always say that outdoor furniture should be as beautiful as your indoor furniture,” says Anthony Spon-Smith, the company’s creative director. The line proved so successful that the two companies have now united under the Coco Republic banner. The HD Buttercup stores in Culver City and Costa Mesa will open as Coco Republic’s second and third stores in California later this year.

Coco Republic’s indoor offerings are just as compelling as its outdoor pieces. “We call it a Golden State of Mind,” says Spon-Smith. “To us, summer’s not a season, it’s a state of mind.” Confirming the synchronicity between the Best Coast and the Land Down Under, the line, which ranges from inviting plump sectionals to sleek marble tables to sculptural vases and generous lounge chairs, epitomizes the casual luxury that is at the heart of California style. Yet, originating from a country known to put beets and pineapple on its burgers, there’s a playfulness woven into the Coco Republic’s well-constructed designs. That includes modular sofas and shelving units, unexpected materials, unique colors, European influences and thoughtful details.

“There’s a lot of value in a design-led brand,” says Spon-Smith, who’s constantly sketching new products. “I just try and do something a little bit different, a little more playful and exciting. We’re always trying to be better and more inspiring.”
