Harbinger Pops-Up in the Santa Ynez Valley

Author:

Known for showcasing some of the most beautiful custom furniture, unique lighting, hand-painted textiles, rare accessories and more, L.A.’s Harbinger showroom just opened a temporary outpost in the Santa Ynez Valley. Located inside renowned vintage and pre-worn designer clothing boutique Brass Tack, the pop-up was curated by Harbinger owner Joe Lucas—who recently moved with his partner to the Valley (see their home that was recently featured here). Lucas brought his signature style to the valley including lighting, select Harbinger by Hand furniture, vintage art and a highly curated assortment of ceramics and accessories. Here, we share our conversation with Lucas about the new designer hotspot.

What inspired you to open the Harbinger pop-up in Santa Ynez?  My friend Melissa was transitioning a portion of Brass Tack—an amazing clothing boutique in Santa Ynez—leaving an empty space for a month, so I messaged her on a Tuesday and said “would you ever be open to me bringing a few accessories up and putting them on consignment?” She replied, “Absolutely!”

Three hours later the conversation changed to “what if I brought a couple chairs and maybe a table?” Then two days later we painted the entire space and I had a truck arrive with over 100 items from the L.A. showroom, lol. It all happened so fast—I loved the idea of sharing some of Harbinger’s best pieces that fit so well in the Santa Ynez Valley.

-How long is the pop-up open?  Dates are loose, but as of now it is open through August in the heart of the Santa Ynez valley at Brass Tack.

-How is the pop-up an extension of the Harbinger L.A. showroom? It’s a mix of our vintage and antique collections as well as some of my collection, art, accessories and lighting.

-Is there a robust design trade community in the valley? There is a huge trade community in Santa Barbara and Montecito and a growing one in the valley.  It’s nice for those offices not to have to travel to L.A. all the time for good shopping.

-Are all the pieces vintage or a mix of custom? It’s all a mix right now. Mostly vintage but we have brought in a few Harbinger By Hand pieces to show off what we do.

-Do you have plans to open a permanent Harbinger Santa Ynez showroom in the future? That’s the million dollar question. Now that my partner David and I live in the Valley, I’d love to, but good retail spaces are hard to come by so we are going to wait and see. But you never know…maybe this pop-up is a Harbinger of things to come!
